Our container grown stock can be shipped and planted year round!
All our plants are grown using sustainable organic practices and we believe our stock to be of superior quality. Our container-grown plants deliver a healthy and robust root system with no transplant shock allowing for maximum growth the first year. The pots we use are called "tree-bands". They are deep, square pots that have mostly open bottoms allowing for air pruning of roots and preventing the circular pot-bound condition that can happen with traditional small-hole round pots.
Container Sizes:
- Most Fruit and nut trees are grown in a 5"x5"x12", 2 gallon tree tube
- Filberts, Hawthorns, Loquats, Jujubes, Paw Paws, Olives, Citrus and Pomegranites are grown in a 4"x4"x10" 1 gallon tree tube
- All bushes and fruiting vines are grown in a 4"X4"X6" pot except for:
- Guavas 9"x3" tree band and Kiwis 4"x10" tree band
- Lingonberries, Grouncovers, and small shrubs are grown in a 4"x6" tree band.
- Tree seedlings are grown in a 9"x3" tree band
ROOTSTOCKS Many fruit trees are grafted on to a type of rootstock to increase disease resistance, tolerance to challenging soil conditions or to limit their size at maturity. We graft our fruit tree varieties onto standard or the more vigorous semi-dwarf rootstocks. This makes for a deep strong rooted tree that is: well anchored needing minimal staking, vigorous and long-lived, productive and that once established, can thrive with a minimal amount of inputs (water and fertilizer). With light pruning these trees can be of a standard or close to standard size, which is good where a substantial sturdy tree is desired as in an orchard where livestock or deer might graze or when you need shade and a place to hang a hammock.
To create a more dwarfed tree for a small yard or an intensively managed high yield orchard begin to summer prune when trees reach the desired height. We have hundreds of trees of all different sorts under this management and find it very satisfying, giving us the easy management and high yields of a traditional semi-dwarf planting with the sturdy trouble free drought resistant qualities of standards.
Rootstocks we use;
- EMLA 111- All our apples are grafted on this well tested hardy drought tolerant clonal rootstock. It can make a tree " the size of a standard. Also induces early bearing.
- Betulifolia- the standard rootstock for Asian pears makes a strong growing and early bearing tree.
- OHXF 513 and 333- These clonal pear rootstocks make a well rooted sturdy tree that is about 2/3 the size of a standard and earlier bearing.
- Winter Nelis- A standard pear rootstock that is hardy and long lived being highly resistant to pear decline. Can make a large tree without summer pruning.
- Colt- A clonal mazzard cherry rootstock that makes a tree about " the size of regular mazzard.
- Mazzard- Standard cherry rootstock is vigorous long-lived and hardy. Can make a large stately tree or be kept at any height with summer pruning.
- Myrobalan- Standard plum rootstock makes a vigorous and productive tree.
- Mariana- Standard plum rootstock similar to myrobalan.
- Lovell- Standard peach rootstock good for a variety of soils. Vigorous, productive and quick to come into bearing.
- Lotus- Standard persimmon rootstock makes a strong drought tolerant tree.
