OUR ORCHARDS | APPRENTICESHIPS *For tree swallow nest box plans, see below
Rolling River is an organically managed, family run Northern California permaculture farm, homestead and nursery, surrounded by National Forest land including three wilderness areas, the Marble Mountains, Siskyous and Trinity Alps. Our 5 acre farm is nestled on a steep mainly south facing slope perched above the Klamath River. We live here with our 3 children, Lucius 17 and Zea 15, Beecher 3, yearly interns, as well as a herd of goats, chickens, ducks, beehives and 2 noble dogs, Bailey and Homer and our cat Rumble. Our generous climate and microclimate, allow us to collect, propagate and grow a diversity of plants from apples and blueberries to Avocadoes, citrus and pomegranates.
"We hope we may be of help to you in creating your own abundance and enjoying the rich rewards that planting trees and perennial plants bring. Besides the benefits of food, shade, wood, and clean air, planting trees is an affirmation of the future, a gift to our children and those to come." - Marc and Corrina
With our passion for working the land and propagating plants we have transformed 2" acres of what was originally a run down and abandoned old homestead covered in star thistle, poison oak and blackberry brambles, into abundant fruit and nut producing groves of trees, bushes and vines and a large home garden. We have amassed a diverse collection that includes hundreds of varieties of edible and useful plants the best of which we are propagating so other adventurous souls may share in the abundance, excitement and joy of self sufficient living that comes with growing your own. Besides our main focus of edible plant nursery production we grow peaches, plums, cherries, apples, pears, Asian pears, figs, table grapes, blueberries and perennial flowers for fresh sale at our local farmers market. We also keep bees for pollination and their delicious honey. Our goats keep us supplied with healthful milk, cheese, kefir(a type of yogurt) and meat. They also are a great source of manure to enrich our soils and our trusty and personable pack wethers help carry our gear on family camping adventures in the surrounding mountains.
Our orchards are planted mainly on our steeper land with alfalfa, clover, birdsfoot trefoil, vetch and many herbs and flowers growing as a ground cover underneath. These forbs protect and enrich the soil, attract beneficial and pollinating insects and make excellent graze for our large flock of chickens that graze underneath the trees, eating lots of bugs and fallen fruit along the way. Wild bird-life has exploded too creating a riot of song and activity and our loyal dogs find deep purpose in their important efforts at keeping the bears, foxes, raccoons and ground squirrels out side the fence and out of the trees! It"s taken a lot of work but it has been deeply satisfying to watch a previously denuded and barren landscape transform into a thriving lush ecosystem teaming with life!
From our family to yours - here is a fun little project to enjoy:
